A Tribe of Toffs
Background information
Origin Sunderland, UK
Genre(s) pop
Years active 1986 - 1990

A Tribe of Toffs were a novelty pop band from Sunderland in the UK. They are best-remembered for their top 30 single "John Kettley is a Weatherman" in 1988.

The band formed while still at school in 1986 and had numerous line up changes. They were noticed after sending a tape of their songs to children's TV presenter Andy Crane. BBC Producer Paul Smith liked the tape and arranged for the band to record the single "John Kettley is a Weatherman". The single went to number 21 in the UK charts in December 1988, and the band appeared on a number of TV shows to play the song. The song is still well remembered for its catchy refrain and video which actually featured the TV weatherman John Kettley.

The song also mentioned other TV weathermen:

Following their largely novelty hit record the band were keen to release some more serious songs, but were unable to secure a record deal. They decided to release a second humorous single in 1989 called "Terry Wogan's On TV (Again)" but it did not chart.

The band split in 1990 and retired from music.
