Musical career
Riley was a member of The Fall from 1978 to 1982,
originally working as a roadie before playing bass and
later lead
guitar. After falling out of favour with The Fall's founder, Mark E.
Smith, Riley left to form his own band, The
Creepers, with whom he released several albums. In the late
eighties he drew and wrote the comic strips Harry The Head and Doctor Mooney for the comic Oink!
Radio career
Riley is perhaps best known as one half of the duo Mark
and Lard with fellow DJ Mark Radcliffe, who
together presented the late evening show Out on Blue Six
on BBC
Radio 1, before moving on to the breakfast show in 1997, and finally to
the 1pm to 3pm slot in January 1998, presenting their final show on the
station in 2004.

After leaving Radio 1, the duo cordially went their separate
ways; Riley moved to BBC 6 Music, and Radcliffe to BBC
Radio 2.
Riley can currently be heard on BBC 6
Music, where he presents Brain Surgery on
Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings and used to present Mint
with Rob Hughes on Sunday
evenings. Radio 6 cancelled this popular show, although Riley has
hinted that elements of it may be included in his week time show.
Mark and Lard have also released two
comedy/parody albums under the guise of The
Shirehorses.
