Early life
He grew up listening to records by The
Cure, Joy Division, The
Stooges, The Velvet Underground, Black
Sabbath, and many other artists. Disintegration
by The
Cure was the first album he bought. While learning guitar, the first
song he learned to play was "Heroin" by The Velvet Underground. He
went to Music College at one point, playing the guitar solo from "Another Girl, Another
Planet" by The Only Ones to get in. He
eventually graduated with a Diploma in Music.
Career
Mogwai
-
Stuart met Dominic Aitchison at a Ned's Atomic Dustbin
concert at the Glasgow QMU on 10 April 1991, and four years later, they formed Mogwai.
Other musical projects
Deadcat Motorbike
Before playing in Mogwai, Stuart played guitar and sang in a
band called Deadcat Motorbike, who played their last show at the old
13th Note bar in Glasgow, in June 1995. It was also around this time that Stuart
drummed for a band called Eska.
Mighty Joe Young Trio
In 2000, he played with a band called Mighty Joe Young Trio,
who played at least one show.
Solo Acoustic Shows
In 2000 and 2002, Stuart performed a few solo acoustic shows.
The Sick Anchors
In 2002, Stuart, Aidan Moffat (a good friend
of Stuart's) and Colin "Sheepy" McPherson released an eponymously
titled EP under the name "The Sick Anchors".
Personal life
Stuart currently lives in Glasgow with his wife, music executive
Grainne Braithwaite and their two dogs, Princess and Rambo. He is vegetarian.
